Course Content

The Level One Programme takes 10 hours to complete and covers the following topics:

  • Correct te reo Māori pronunciation
  • Common Māori kupu (words) and everyday phrases
  • Kupu to express feelings and kupu related to whānau relationships
  • Greetings and farewells for oral and written communication
  • Communicating using past, present and future sentence structures

The course is presented within a cultural context incorporating:

  • Māori values
  • Waiata (songs) and Karakia (prayers)
  • Whakataukī (proverbs) and Kīwaha (idioms)
  • Pōwhiri (welcome) and Tikanga (protocols)
  • Mihi and Pepeha (welcome and personal introduction)
  • The content will be tailored to relate to the specific organisation.
  • The Level Two content continues the journey for those wishing to more fully develop their reo competence.
